Be Aware Of
Mail Identity Theft
Identity theft is a serious,
criminal act that is committed against millions of people each
year.
When a person is convicted of identity theft, they are
automatically given a minimum of five years in jail. This crime
occurs when personal information is taken from one person by
another and used to misrepresent that individual to commit
fraud. This is usually done to obtain the victim's money, but
it can also be used to obtain credit.
There are several different ways
that thieves can steal your information and which they can use
to commit identity theft. In the mail, online, or on your
person, personal information should be guarded. You should
never carry your social security card or any document with your
social security number on it with you.
If your wallet is ever lost or stolen, your personal
information could end up in the wrong hands. Also, don't use
your personal information on the computer as there are hackers
who know how to get into your information and take what they
need to steal your identity.
Mail identity theft is another
problem and it has been around from the beginning of the crime.
Thieves will actually steal from another person's mail box to
obtain the information they need to steal the person's
identity. In order to reduce the risk of mail identity theft,
there are steps you can take.
The best defense against
mail identity theft is
prevention since you may not know your identity has been taken
until a lot of time has passed. The longer it is before you
take action against identity theft, the harder it is to get
things resolved. To protect yourself against mail identity
theft, you should check your credit report frequently.
Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion are the three credit
reporting firms and you can check your credit report through
them. If your credit report shows negative information that you
aren't responsible for, then you may have been a victim of
mail identity theft.
