Corporate
Identity Theft - Identify It and Prevent It
Identity theft is a
terrible crime that occurs when one person uses another's
personal information to commit fraudulent acts.
Although identity theft has been a problem for several
years, it has also grown into a bigger crime with
corporate identity
theft. Corporate identity theft is the misuse of a
company's identity as opposed to one individual.
There is more than one way
that people commit corporate identity theft. Sometimes they use
the name of a company to set up an online account and going
through trash to get the personal information they need from
employees. They can also hack into websites that belong to the
real company to lure would-be customers to another site.
Something as simple as setting up a site with a domain name
that is similar to the other company's can bring in lots
of people that think they are accessing the right
company.
Guard Yourself
Against Corporate Identity Theft
One of the most important
steps you can take to protect your company online is to perform
regular security maintenance to make sure your site is safe.
Have the site accessed regularly and have an e-mail address on
the home page that visitors can use to contact you if they have
any complications. You should also run regular checks through
your search engines to see if there are any similar domain
names. Since you must register the domain name that you use,
you may want to consider registering any that are similar and
may be used fraudulently as well.
Since so much business now
takes place online, much of the corporate identity theft takes
place online as well. This is why it is so important that every
type of protection be a part of your computer system. Regularly
updated virus protection, adware and spyware blockers, and
firewalls are essential to protect the computers that are used
in your business. It is much easier to take steps to prevent
corporate identity theft than it is to stop it once it has
happened.
