Are You At
Risk For Identity Theft?
Identity
theft has gotten to be a well known topic for many of
us.
Whether you are shopping online, mailing checks for
payment, or filling out important forms for insurance, medical
treatments, or even to the government, you are at risk for
identity theft. No matter what improvements are made to prevent
this terrible crime, thieves just get smarter and learn how to
work around it. No matter what precautions you take against
identity theft you still have a chance of becoming a victim to
it. Some individuals don't take any precautions, however, and
put themselves at risk regularly.
If you use your computer to do your
banking or pay your credit card bills without having good
security protection that is updated regularly,
you are putting out the welcome mat for those who commit
identity theft? These people are
smart and they know who to target and how to get into your
information on the internet.
You should also make sure to shred
every document before you put it into the trash. It may be hard
to imagine, but some people will go through trash and steal
from non-secured mailboxes to find your personal information.
Check your credit report frequently. Once thieves have your
information, they can use it to open new accounts and buy
extravagant items. You may be maxed out on a credit card you
didn't even know existed in your name.
Never give out your personal
information over the phone, especially if you received the call
asking for it. Although it is necessary to use your information
on the internet to make transactions, be cautious about which
sites you go on to put your information in. Don't click on
links that take you to other sites that then ask for your
information.
To prevent being a victim of
identity theft, you must take
action to protect yourself. You don't have to have a lot of
money in the bank to be an ideal target for thieves, you
just need to have a good credit rating.
